I am South African and stumbled across your web site whilst looking for an appropriate name for mine. Can you or someone tell me more or point me to a place where I can learn more about the origin of the name? My last name/surname is Mumble and I would like to know more about the origin of this surname. We are the only family with the Mumble surname in South Africa and it has been rumoured that its roots are in Wales or in the Americas.

My email address is 'dmumble@mweb.co.za'. If there is anyone who can provide any info, I would be quite happy to hear from you.

Thanks.

Hey dmumble,
Mumbles is small town just along the coast from Swansea in the south of Wales, in the UK. It's a rugged coastline with rocky heads and dotted with beautiful sandy beaches and a favorite with sufers. But bring your wet suit it is COLD!! No wimps here. There is a pub every fifty feet or so and the Welsh are a mystical people who sing at the tops of their voices, play rugby like madmen and are just too cool. Check out others Welsh sites.

Hi Mumble !
My mother used to say : Mumbles was named after the shape of the Mumbles head and the lighthouse giving that mamary look hence the name. But is it true I don't know but it was great for me to spend some time there !!!!

The name comes from the french word for "tits" because the skyline looks like a pair of tits!

Check out the silhouette above!

Strangely enough, the last poster is correct. Mumbles is a corruption of mamelles, the French for breasts. The reason is apparent if you look at the profile of the shoreline.
